In the mid-2000s, neuroscientist Karl Friston proposed the free energy principle, a unified theory of the brain. He argued that, “A [living] agent does not have a model of its world—it is a model… [that] reduces surprise or uncertainty by making predictions… [meaning] every aspect of our brain and body can be predicted from our environment”. His view has generated intrigue and debate ever since.
